On the other hand, for independent living, the cost breakdown is different. Independent living residents in most continuing care retirement communities pay a one-time admission fee, typically 75 to 90 percent refundable when they leave, and a monthly charge to support their housekeeping, maintenance, security, scheduled programs, and some meals.

Most independent living communities do not provide these services since they are designed for our elderly loved ones who do not require considerable support or medical care.
In assisted living communities, the team assists your loved ones with their daily tasks. The team members and a trained nurse are always on call in most assisted living communities for your loved one’s convenience and safety.
Community Design
For independent living communities, they may be designed with multiple buildings spread across a large campus, with a central gathering area for activities and meals. The living areas have wider space and it’s usually further to travel between buildings either by foot or car.
On the other hand, assisted living communities are more self-contained and have a smaller area. Most of the resident’s needs are met right in the building. Memory programs in assisted living communities are even more thoughtfully designed as there are memory boxes, enhanced lighting, visual cues, and safe indoor and outdoor spaces for residents.
Family Involvement
For independent living, family members are encouraged to be involved, however, the majority of the decision relies on the resident. Family members can visit their loved ones and enjoy the various amenities available in the community.
As for assisted living communities, families play a more active role in their loved one’s care, especially for residents with dementia. Family members are regularly informed about their loved one’s progress and are involved in the care plan.
